What technologies enable streaming directly to avatars - vHud etc ?

What possibilties do these technologies enable ?

i3d definitely has some interesting work going on with this: http://www.i3dnow.com/ssn.php

I spoke with Jacob (see info below) and the key is their SilverStream servers which basically manage the per avatar streams...but you need a server on each parcel to do this.
